AdviSE - Recap from our 2019 High School Competition

Luke Han, our 2019 Competitions Director recaps AdviSE 2019, our Secondary School Social Enterprise Case Competition which was held on 13 April 2019 based on a problem from Everybody Eats.

Following from the success of last year’s inaugural competition, SINZ hosted our annual Secondary Schools AdviSE Case Competition on the 13th of April. We are proud and grateful to say it was a very heartening day. A diverse range of students participated from around Auckland, from a variety schools and different year levels. This diversity led to a wide range of perspectives and interesting ideas brought forth. It was inspiring to see young students consider the social issues that surround them and even more so deliver their ideas in such a professional manner.

High school students were tasked with helping out the amazing social enterprise – Everybody Eats, who are doing amazing work towards solving one of the New Zealand’s most pressing social issues, food waste by rescuing food and feeding the hungry in an innovative way. They informed the students on a challenging issue they face, while at the same time informing them about important topics such as food waste and income inequality.

Teams were allocated 3 hours to analyse the issue provided by Everybody Eats and to prepare a solution that not only helped Everybody Eats in a business sense, but deliver real social impact. We were incredibly impressed by the teams dedication and the collaborative work within their respective teams. It was inspiring to see them utilising the resources we provided to them on delivering a business presentation and how social enterprises work in our workshop prior to the competition day. Each team gave their best effort and for many of them, this was their first experience at analysing a business issue.

After a productive session of preparation each team was given time to present their ideas directly to Everybody Eats and a couple of SINZ alumni. Many innovative solutions were brought forth in a very professional, eye-catching manner. They then had to think on their feet and respond to thought-provoking questions from the judge panel. Overall, the Judges had a hard time deciding a winner but in the end the amazing Westlake Girls High School Team: Nga Toa o Ururoto took out first place.

Participants found AdviSE to be a very rewarding experience – for both the Social Enterprise and the High-School Students. A special thank you to all high school participants, I am personally super keen to see the future of you social innovators. Another special thank you to Everybody Eats for taking out the time to help us connect students to social impact.

The aim of our competition was to spark an interest and provide opportunity to students who want to learn about how to provide positive social impact for their local community and even in the global sense. I can definitely say I am very excited and inspired by these future social innovators who have such talent and clear passion for making a positive difference. Looking forward to our next AdviSE!
